Good Bye My Dear Friend...
とうとう来てしまった。まぁ、いずれはそうなるだろうと思っていたが、想定よりかなり早まってしまった。
何があったかと言うと、インショアレガッタの前日、念願のBBQの食材をもって、愛車のCLK320に鍵を差し込んで、さぁ浦安マリーナへ！っと行こうと思ったところ、鍵が回らない。ハンドルロックもかかっていて、パーキングからギアも抜けない。。。「え？こんな症状初めて。。。」っと思って頭が真っ白になっていたのだが、愛車は使えないと判断。タイムズのカーシェアリングで車を手配。とりあえず、BBQのものは運んでおいた。調理している間にいつもお世話になっているタキザワ自動車に電話を入れて、何かできるか調べてもらうことに。
インショアレガッタも終わって、翌日、タキザワ自動車に電話して聞いてみる。すると、最悪のニュースだった。おそらく、キーユニットの故障または鍵が壊れているかであった。直すのにパーツだけで、20万～50万。「げ！」思わず絶句してしまった。ソフトトップも交換が必要で、30万かかると言うのに。実はこの時点で、雨漏りも結構悪くなってきていたので、ドライブレコーダーの電源が壊れることもあった。次に何が壊れるかわからない。。。また、ユニット交換するだけでは、また壊れるのではと思うようになった。さすがにこれは。。。タキザワさんとも相談して、もう充分乗り回したのだから、っとの意見だった。
とりあえず、愛車をタキザワ自動車へ運搬しないと。保険屋さんに連絡を入れて、レッカー移動を依頼。プランニングを除いて、レッカーの実作業だけで2時間。プロのこだわりでゆっくりゆっくり愛車を駐車場から出して、タキザワ自動車へ。
本日、愛車の廃車の手続きを開始。必要な書類を揃えて、タキザワ自動車に渡しておいた。離婚して初めてやったことがこの愛車の購入だった。なぜか知らんが、ボルボに乗っているより、ベンツのオープンカーの方がよかった。それがこの11年間、ずーっとサポートしてくれていたこの愛車。色んなことろを修理したなぁ。大きいところで、エアコンのコンプレッサー、スピードメーター、ドアの交換。細かいところではエンジンマウントの交換、ATFの交換。あと、ホロの油圧ポンプも自分で交換した。付き合ってくれた女性とのデートのサポート、大阪―東京間を何回往復したことか。日常的にはスーパーへの買い出しもサポートしてくれた。それと自宅とマリーナの行き帰り。。。今まで、ありがとう。Good Bye My Dear Friend...

その後、CLK320に乗って、思い出になった場面をいろいろ考えたところ、その中で一番思い出になったのは、実は80になったオヤジを乗っけて、お花見やお墓参り行ったことだった。オープンにして、ベレー帽をかぶったおじいさんを助手席にのっけて、お墓まえりをしたあと、ペニンシュラ東京で食事をした。。。あの時、コンシェルジュさんらがとても親切にしてくれた。耳が遠いオヤジは勝手に歩き始めるし。やっぱり、あの時が一番の思い出だったな。。。

愛車の手術をできることは確認したが、移植用のソフトトップの油圧ポンプが見つからない。
I confirmed that I can do the necessary surgery for my car, but I have no pump for the transplantation.
知り合いに頼んで、日本国内の市場を探してもらったが、見つからない。ネットで検索するとeBayで中古のものが見つかる。事故車から取り出して、動作チェックしただの、ただ、日本に送れるか書いていない。値段としては２万円から４万円。悪くないのだが、国際的の個人売買となる。ちゃんと機能しなかった場合、どうすべきか不安が残る。
I asked a friend of mine to check the market in Japan, but to no avail. Searching the net showed used parts on eBay. It says it was taken from a car in an accident, but tested. However, it did not say about sending it to Japan. Cost was from 200 to 400USD. It's not bad, but it is going to be a personal import overseas. Since I have no experience in this, should it not work, I felt anxious about what to do about it.

Anyway, I decided to memorize how to go about the surgery and viewed and reviewed the vidoes on YouTube. Then I came across a video by Top Hydraulics https://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/

リビルドのパーツを売っている会社だった。自信をもって、この会社のリビルド品の方がOEMと比べて質が良いという。３年保証付き。コスト６００ドル。どうだろう。。。３００ドルの敷金でコアを送ってくれて、交換したパーツを送れば敷金が返ってくるシステムも。う～ん。。。これが信頼できる会社なら良いのだが。顔を見ていない相手とどう信頼関係を築く？。。。
It was a company dealing with rebuilt parts. The company was confident with its work and claimed that it was better than the OEMs. With three year warranty, the cost was 600USD. Hmmm...interesting... with 300USD deposit, I can get a core part and send in the replaced broken one for a refund of the deposit. I haven't met the guy, how do I build the trust needed for such transaction?
マリーナでも車を扱っている人がいるので、話をして意見を聞く。みんなeBayで買うより、この会社を通した方が良いとの意見。とりあえず、メールを出してみることに。。。こんなようなことがあって、新品はちょっと論外な値段で、eBayで買ってそっちに送ることも考えている、相談に乗ってくれと書いたら、数分で返事があった。やり取りを数回繰り返す。
There are folks handling cars at the marina, so I decided to ask for their opinions and views. Everyone recommended to purchase through this company rather than purchase on eBay. So, I sent them an email explaining the situation, like the cost of a brand new pump was out of the question, and I was also thinking of buying one off eBay and sending it to them. Within minutes, I got a response and several exchanges followed.
「オイルとサイフォンを購入してから注文する」
I am going to get hold of the hydraulic oil and a siphon before I purchase.
「オイルは充填して送るからサイフォンもいらない」
The oil will be filled, you don't need to do that.
「フラッシングはしなくていいの？」
Don't I need flush?
「写真のオイルの色を見るといらないと判断できる」
Judging from the photos you sent me, there is no need for that.
いろいろとアドバイスに乗ってくれて、相手にこっちの状態も理解してもらい、オンラインで注文を行う。９００ドルをクレジットカードで。
I got several advices, and he understood where I am at. I placed my order online.
するとさらにいろいろと好意やってくれて、FedExでマリーナに送ってもらう。月曜日にメールを投げてから、金曜日にはパーツが届いた。翌日、さっそくパーツの交換の作業を行う。
He did everything he can to make it easier for me. And the pump was sent to the marina via FedEx. I sent them an email on Monday and the pump arrived on Friday. I went to work on the following day.
３０分で油圧ポンプに到達。ポンプを外す作業は思った以上に手こずった。油圧パイプをポンプのフレームから外す作業、ポンプからパイプを外す作業など。。。オイルまみれになると聞いていたのだが、思ったよりあまり漏れなかった。
It took me 30min to get to the pump. However, taking the pump out took more time. Taking the frame off the pump took a bit of thinking as well. After taking the pipes off, I thought I would have been covered in oil, but spillage was not a much as I had expected.
外したものをつなげ合わせて、うまくいくか確認。スイッチ入れてもうんともすんとも言わない。ちょっとがっかりした。気を落とさずに、とりあえず、全部つなげ合わせて、現状を復帰。再度確認。すると問題なく閉まる。「お～！凄い凄い！」一緒に手伝ってくれていたTeam VelistaのMさんと喜ぶ。しかし、開けようとすると途中で止まる。パワー不足みたい。っと思って、メールを送って確認。すると返ってきた返事は「ケーブルの調整が必要と思われる」ビデオもついてきたので、それを見る。確かに言っているようにケーブルが緩んでいる感じであった。あまり細かくなかったので、ほかのビデオを探したけども、フランス語であったり、理解はしきれていなかった。
After putting together the parts, I tried to see if it works. Initially, nothing happened by pressing on the switch, which was disappointing. Not to be put down, I decided to put everything back together. Then it closed with no problems at all. "Wow! It works!" M-san from Team Velista and I did a high five. But, while opening it, it stopped. It seemed to be lacking power. I sent an email to TopHydraulics who promptly advised to check the cables and sent me a video. Like as it said, the cables in the SoftTop seemed to loose. The video was not too detailed, so I checked for other videos but it was in French... which I do not understand that well..
翌日、ソフトトップの内張を外そうとするが、うまくいかない。それと、プラスチックのパーツが２０年ものなので、触っただけで、ばらばらになってしまった。やることが増えてしまった。
The following day, I tried to remove the inner lining of the softtop, but this was not easy without understanding the construction. In addition, checking for the cables made me touch the plastic parts which was brittle from 20 years of operations. It broke apart on contact with my hand. This is adding to the work that I need to do.
とりあえず、ここまでできたので、帰りにいつもお世話になっているタキザワ自動車へ。
Well, I came this far... So, I decided to pay a visit to the shop I always go to, Takizawa Automobiles http://www.carpaint-takizawa.com/
「ダッチマンさん、いかがいたしましたか？」
"Sir, what can do for you today?"
「いやぁ、ポンプを入れ替えたのでね、見せに来たの」
"Well, I replaced the pump and wanted for you to see it"
「え？いや、この仕事すごい心残りだったのですよ。凄い時間かかって、ギブアップであったので、もうしあわけない気持ちだけですわ。」
"What?? That is job I really regret that I could not complete it"
「いえいえ、いつもお世話になっているので、全然気にしていません。アメリカから輸入しました。」
"No, no. I am always appreciate the work that you do. I imported it from the US."
「ビデオをとってよいですか？」
"Can I take a video of it?"
「ええ、もちろんいいですよ」
"Sure, absolutely"
ソフトトップが閉まる。

「いえいえ、自分でやるしかないと思ったので、やっただけです。」

その後いろいろと話す。私もやりたかったことがあって、ヘッドライトの曇りをきれいにすることを相談に乗ってくれて、教えてくれました。それと、トランクとソフトトップの開閉時に傷のついたところの塗装のやり直しなど。。。タキザワ自動車には板金の仕事から、ドアの交換、油圧シリンダーの修理から、エンジンマウントの交換をやってくれていたので、私の愛車も安心して、頼れるところがあると思っています。これにTop Hydraulicsが加わって、車を手放すことはないでしょう。
We talked alot after that. He told me what to do to clear the headlight cover that had grown old and how to repaint the parts that scratched on the softtop cover and the luggage compartment door. Takizawa Automobiles had did a number of reforming work, to replacement of the door, to hydraulic cylinder repair and engine mount replacement to my satisfaction. With Top Hydraulics being added as a reliable partner, I will not let go of my car in the near future.

「B is for Build」このシリーズは事故でぶっ壊れた日産GTRを買ってきて、自分で修復すると。ひん曲がっているボディを溶接して直して、直せないパーツは中古のものを買ってきて、後輪の車軸を外して、フレームの取り換え、ボディパネルを丁寧につなげ合わせる。なんかすごい。凄いだけでなくて、すごく楽しそう。壊れたものがきれいに直っていくはたのしいだろう。。。
"B is for Build"... this guy is rebuilding a Nissan GTR which was involved in an accident. It just looked really fun, just fixing everything and watching it come alive.
っと思っていた矢先。。。愛車が故障。99年のCLK320。ソフトトップが開かない。オープンカーなのに開かない。ちょっと悲しいので、修理に出す。今から思えば、去年の夏から何らかの症状が。。。その時はコンピュータをリセットすることで、機嫌がよくなり、去年の11月まで、特に大きな問題なし。11月にソフトトップを閉めて、エンジンを切ろうとしたら、モーターの回りっぱなしの音が後ろから聞こえてくる。キーを抜いても回りっぱなし。バッテリーが上がるの、バッテリーケーブルを外すことを考える。「いや、ヒューズで十分のはずだ」っと思い、急いで取り扱い説明書を確認し、ソフトトップのヒューズの場所を特定する。４０Ａのヒューズを確認し、ヒューズを指でつまんで、力をかけて抜こうとすると、変形する感触がした。「うん？」っと思った次の瞬間、指に高熱が伝わってくる！「痛てぇ～！！！」指が火傷したと同時に、壊れたヒューズが取れてくる。モーターが止まったが、ちょっと驚いた。火傷は大したことはなかったが、このままではソフトトップは開かない。そこでいつもお世話になっている、修理屋さんへ。
Just when I was thinking that... my lovely car, a 1999 model CLK320 broke. The convertible soft top does not open any more. So, I put it into a repair shop to get it fixed. In retrospect, this started happening from last summer, when it just stopped working. At that time, they just reset the computer and it started working again. Then in November, after I closed the soft top I found that the motor in the back kept running, even if it was closed. It would drain the battery so, I decided to remove the fuse. When I found the fuse and removed it, I got burned due to heat on the fuse. The fuse broke because of the heat as well. I brought it to the repair shop again.
しかし、翌日電話がかかってくる。
However, the following day, I got a call...
「どうしました？」
"What happened?"
「ダッチマンさん、すみません。今ちゃんと動くのですよ」
"Sir, it started to work again"
「はぁ、直ったのですか？」
"Ok it's fixed?"
「原因究明のためにヒューズを入れたのですが、そのまま動くのです」
"I was trying to find the cause, but just by replacing the fuse, it is working ok..."
「はぁ。。。」
"oh..."
「正常に動いているので、原因究明もどうもできません。申し訳ありません。」
"I am sorry but I cannot find a problem when it is working all right."
「まぁ、そうですよね。。。。」
"well, that is true..."
「ちょっと、しっくりは来ないと思いますが、様子を見ていただけますか？」
"I don't like it myself, but could you kindly see how it goes?"
「なんかセンサーが調子悪いのですかねぇ。」
"I am thinking it is some sensor that is not working right..."
「なんか、迷宮入りするような感じがします。」
"This is going to be a real puzzle..."
「それはいやですが、仕方ないですね。了解いたしました。様子を見ます。」
"Yeah, I don't like it but, what can we do..."
そして２か月。また、動かなくなる。
2months later, it fails again...
「助けてぇ～」
"Help me-..."
「はいはい、お待ちしておりますので、車を持ってきてください。」
"Ok, Ok, pls bring your car in..."
預けて、１０日後。写メが送られてくる。電話をくれと。
10days later, I get some photos in an email and asking for a call...
「この写真は。。。？私は何を見ているのですか？なんか、悪いニュースみたい」
"Is it some bad news? What am I looking at...?"
そこから丁寧な説明が。。。「今までのことを考えて、リレーの故障であると思い、交換をいたしました。一旦動いたものの、また、動かなくなり、油圧ポンプのモーターの故障していると判断し、交換を考えました。」
In a very calm voice, detailed explanation started..."From what was going on, we thought it was the relay and replaced it. It worked once, then stopped working again. We felt it was the motor in the pump that is not working and thought to replace it."
「え～、まぁ、そうするしかないですよね。。。」
"Well.. that is what we can do.."
「問題はその値段です。」
"The problem is the price"
「え～。。。もしかして、５０万するとか？」ちょっと吹っ掛けていってみたつもり。
"What? Don't tell me it is 5000USD?" I thought I was being sarcastic.

「倍以上です。１２７万です。パーツだけで。」

話にならないので、とりあえず、車を返してもらい、修理屋さんの丁寧な話を聞きました。リビルドを試みたとか、中古パーツを探したとか。日本では油圧ポンプがない。しかし、新品は論外の値段。どうする？
What can I do besides get my car back. I listened to his story from trying to rebuild the pump, and look for used parts on the market. There is none in Japan, but the price of the new one is out of the question. Now what to do...
とりあえず、フェイスブックに記事を書いてみることに。車のことなので、やはり、助言をしてくれる人、一緒にパーツを探してくれる人がいた。パーツ番号を修理屋さんに教えてもらい、ネットで探してみたところ、eBayで中古のものを発見。しかし、日本にはない。また、中古のものをeBayで買って日本まで個人輸入は大丈夫かなど。。。いろいろ考えた。。。日本では修理屋さんは中古のポンプはトラブルのもとになるのでなるべく避けるなど、複数の人から話を聞き、車を助けるなら、自分で購入しないとならないと結論付けた。
I decided to write in Facebook. Since it is about a car, there were people willing to help out, look for parts. I got the part number from the repair shop and searched on eBay, which resulted in used parts as well. But not in Japan. Is it safe to personnally import from eBay? I had to think many many things. The repair shop and several others said that the shops in Japan would try to avoid using used hydraulics as it is a source of trouble. I thought, if I were to save the car, I would have to find it myself.
しかし、パーツが手に入ってからどうする？修理屋さんにもっていくか？自分でやるか？最近のネットでは既にやっている人が動画をアップしていることが多い。ＣＬＫ３２０のソフトトップのハイドロポンプの交換手順を紹介しているビデオもあった。２０年前の車なので、ＤＩＹでやるしかないので、そういうビデオですよね。
However, what should I do when I get the part. Bring it to a shop? Do it myself? The net is a good source for these things as some folks it already and uploaded videos of it.

いくらまでかかる？ＯＥＭを海外で注文すると３０万強。日本で程度の良い中古車は４０万ぐらい。今まで中古車を買うと、エアコンのコンプレッサーだけで、４０万ぐらいかかっていたので、３０～４０万は行きたくないなぁっと自分なりにリミットをつける。
So the budget? A new OEM overseas will be about 3000USD. And a used car in good condition will be about 4000USD in Japan. I have bought used cars before which resulted in a 4000USD cost to replace the air conditioning compressor...so, that would be an absolute limit.
ってなわけで、修理屋さんはやめておく。ＤＩＹだ。。。また、今の車は売れないとも結論付ける。ってなわけで、もう失うものはない、楽しむだけだ。自分でやろう。っとまた、気が大きくなる。
So, bring it into a repair shop with a used part is out of the question. It would be DIY. I also felt that the car has no value and would not sale anyway. So, it is there for me to enjoy it. DIY it is.

Still cannot find a pump in Japan. Well, the professionals tried to find it with no luck. I asked a friend of mine to do so. His advice was due to the motor being burned out, the oil needs replacement and flushing is also needed. Well, does it take any oil?

フラッシングのやり方もビデオやマニュアルがあった。また、別の油圧ポンプの交換ビデオもあった。いろいろ比較して、違いがあるところも発見。手順を頭の中に入れておく。
I also found videos and manuals on flushing. In addition, I found other hydraulic pump replacement videos for CLK320s. Compared those videos, noted any difference I found and memorized the process.
そして、本日。パーツ番号も聞いただけの話なので、自分で確認してみることに。しかし、使える工具などはマリーナにある。マリーナのヤードに車を入れるのは荷物を出し入れするだけのはずだけども、「今回はちょっと許せ。。。」っと厚かましく、車を入れました。
Today, since I just was told about the part number in the car, I decided it would be a good idea to confirm this in my car. Since, all the tools that I had was in the marina. I decided to do it there. Although, car are only allowed in the yard in the marina to drop off and pick things up, I told myself, "Make an exception this time..."
トランクの荷物を出して、工具を船から降ろして、カーペット類を外し始めると、マリーナの人々が興味津々。みんな集まってきて、何をしているか聞いてくる。いろいろ事情を話して、自分でやるのだと説明しておいた。
Got the tools from the boat, pulled out the stuff out of the luggage compartment... then I was surrounded folks working that the service station of the marina. I was drawing interest from those folks.
作業すること１時間。ハイドロポンプを確認することができた。パーツ番号も確認。今までeBayで見ていたものと一緒であった。
After working for an hour, I was able to see the part numbers on the hydraulic pump. It was the same as the one I was told.
今度は逆の工程、取ったものを着けなおす。作業すること１時間半。終わり。これで、できることを十分確認。後はハイドロポンプをどう手に入れるかであった。
Working in reverse order, I placed back all the part. After an hour and a half, it was done. So, the next step is how to get hold of a hydraulic pump.

「B is for Build」このシリーズは事故でぶっ壊れた日産GTRを買ってきて、自分で修復すると。ひん曲がっているボディを溶接して直して、直せないパーツは中古のものを買ってきて、後輪の車軸を外して、フレームの取り換え、ボディパネルを丁寧につなげ合わせる。なんかすごい。凄いだけでなくて、すごく楽しそう。壊れたものがきれいに直っていくはたのしいだろう。。。
