キャプテンチャレンジ [ボランティア活動]
さてはて。。。
2017年も終盤。。。この時期は恒例の忘年会。その時にクラブレースの年間成績が発表される。ＴＹＣのクラブレース、ＴＢＣのクラブレース。シーズン2015に関東でチームを初めて3年目、2017年のTeam Rabbit's Tailの活動は。。。実は、う～ん、ミニマムだった。チームのリーダーが始めの4か月、松葉づえで何もできず。その後、数少ないメンバーも転職により休部、結婚願望の強いものは婚活などに専念などで、活動ができるメンバーがさらに限定され、Team Rabbit's Tailもこれまでかぁ～っと思い悩むぐらいであった。だが、できる範囲のことをやった。自分が楽しめることを。ロングの保田、大島、新島、式根島からイベントのトウキョウズ・カップ、タモリカップに続いて、ふれあいヨットセーリング体験へのボランティア参加し、さらにレース委員会のCommittee Boatに参加。その中で、一番良かったことが、Team NaoNaoの皆さんをはじめ、他のチームの方々との交流が格段と増え、いろんな繋がりができてきた。意図的ではなかったので、ちょっとしたサプライズであった。良かった。
2017年の最後は日本障害者セーリング協会のイベント、パラセーリングキャプテンチャレンジ東京に参加！チームの新メンバーのＭさんと一緒に。
ここからは、フォトエッセイ。
今日はここまで。

Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort Volunteer Work - Part 5: Last day
米国に来て３週間。あと残り１週間。我ながら活発的であったと思う。本日で５軒のお家で手伝ってきた。大変有意義な３週間であった。新しい会社での研修でも新たなお友達を作ったが、ボランティア活動でもいろんな人とあえて、すごくよかったと思う。
It has been three weeks since I came to the US. Another 1 week to go. I would think I kept myself busy all this time. I helped out in five houses all together. It has been a very meaningful three weeks. I made friends in this new company I started working for as well as meeting all the folks who came together in the time of need.
我なりにすごく満足しています。いろんなことができ、やはり去年の３・１１の東日本大震災で援助に来てくれたことに対して感謝の気持ちを表せることができたことがうれしかった。
I am more than satisfied... I accomplished for myself many things, most of which is to say Thank You for the help we got in Japan for the 3/11 Earthquake/Tsunami disaster we had last year.
今回、一緒に参加させていただいたWe are Team Jerseyの皆さんに感謝を示すとともに、参加をサポートしてくださった新しい会社の上司や情報提供してくださった同僚、また今回お目にかかった人々にも感謝しています。
I would like to express my appreciation to the people of We are Team Jersey as well as my superior in the new company, together with the colleagues who provided me with the information to make this possible. Last but not least, all brilliant people whom I had the pleasure of meeting during the volunteer work.

今日はデモリションマンをするつもりであったが、急きょ仕事内容の変更。やったことがないので、ちょっと手間取った。
I thought I signed up for demolition... but there was a sudden change in the job. I really haven't done painting before, but I gave it my best shot.

Sandy-chan Volunteer Activity - Part3: The best customer care
本日の作業：前回と同様、家の改修工事のうち、傷んだ壁（石膏ボードなどのドライウオール）や床、カビている断熱材の撤去および荷物や家具の運び出し。
Today's work: Same as before, removal of dry wall, flooring and molded insulation and taking out of furniture and stuff.
本日もおばあちゃんのお家にお邪魔しに行きました。集合時間より１時間半前の９時に到着。すると、おばあちゃんとボランティア活動のリーダのマークとがすでに作業をしていた。おばあちゃんと挨拶を交わしたけども、「来ちゃったの？」っと言うような感じであった。どうしてかなと思っていたところ後でその理由が分かった。
I visited another old lady's house. I arrived an hour and a half early at about 9AM. The project leader Mark and the old lady was working already. I greeted the old lady who had a sad look as if to say, "You came?". I thought it was a bit weird but I learned the reason soon after.
部屋の数、荷物の多さから多くの家族が住んでいたのがうかがわれる。マークにはじめは何をしたらいいか聞くと、荷物を運び出すことを言われる。
From the number of rooms and the volume of stuff that was there, it was obvious many people lived there. I asked Mark what to do and he guided me to get the stuff out.
おばあちゃんにここの物を出していいかと聞くと、「これは残しておいて。。。」
I asked old lady whether I can remove these and she tells me "Please leave it."
「この部屋は？」
"How about this room?"
「ここはまだ整理できていないの」
"I am sorry I have not been able to organize that yet."
「あれ～、ブラウン管のテレビがある」
"Hey look! An old cathode-ray tube TV!"
「それまだ新しいのよ」
"Oh that is still new..."
「なぬ。。。？」ちょっと耳を疑ったところで、マークを呼ぶ。「マーク、やばいよ、まだ決心がついていないよ。どうしたらいい？」
I was not sure if I heard her right, but it became apparent with where she was trying to drive me to. "Mark, she has not made her mind yet, this is not good..."
マークはおばあちゃんと話をする。「つらいのはわかるよ、しかし、水につかったものはカビが生えてきている。捨てないと体に悪い。」一応、説得しておいてくれた。
Mark approaches the old lady "I want you to listen real hard. I know that it is tough but mold is growing already. We need to let things go." He convinced her for a while.
しかし、作業を始めるとやはり気になって、みんなに指示を出してくるおばあちゃん。仕方ないから、私は彼女に椅子を持ってきて玄関の外に座ってもらうことにした。
However, as soon as we started our work, she started to give instructions. So, I decided to bring her a chair and I had to ask her to sit down at the entrance to the house.
「いいですか、みんな物を持ち出すますから、気になったものは言ってください。まずはこの箱の書類から。」
"Ok I am going to have everyone pass infront of you. Please yell if you see anything. Kindly start with this box of papers."
「あそこの机を持ってきて。それを使うわ」
"Bring me that table please, let me use it."
そのあとは、みんなで彼女に声をかけ、気を配りながら、作業をする。すべてを失ったおばあちゃんへの最高のケアであった。
Since then, everyone said a word or two to the lady, providing the attention and working at the same time. It was the best care we could provide to an old lady who lost everything.

ハリケーンから４週間。何も手をつけていないということでカビだらけだということ。本日は重装備。
It has been four weeks since the hurricane. Apparently nothing has been done and things are getting molded. Today was going to be done in heavy armor...

I am not nationalistic and certainly not in the habit of raising the Hiromaru flag. But I wanted to say Thank you from Japan.
最後にみんなでグループ写真。本日来たのはボーイスカウトの集団とその親を含めて、５０名はいたね。

本日の作業：家の改修工事のうち、保険やFEMAの助成金がカバーしないところの作業の傷んだ壁（石膏ボードなどのドライウオール）や床、カビている保温素材の撤去。
Today's work: Removal of the dry wall, floors, and molded insulation which apparently FEMA or insurance does not cover.
日本だとリフォームの一環としてこの辺あたりの作業も保険や助成金でカバーしてくれるのだろう思うのですが、だけど、流れ込んだ土砂とかは。。。まぁ。。。見てくれないのかな。そこで、土砂だけでなく、「残骸」と考えられるところは米国ではだめなのでしょうかね。。。
In Japan, I would expect the insurance and grants would cover this type of work as part of reform but well... maybe not the sand and dirt that got washed in.
本日は８７歳のおばあちゃんのお家にお邪魔しに行きました。
Today, I visited a home of a 87yr old lady.
するとどうでしょう。。。ドアにこんな張り紙が。。。
On the door it says...
家に住んじゃだめだぁ～？？？話を聞くと、ハリケーンのために下水が逆流、地域のコミュニティ全体が１メートル冠水。１９５０年に建てた家だけども、取り壊さずに直したいとのことだった。そこで、作業を手伝ってほしいっとの依頼でした。
Uninhabitable??? From what I hear, the hurricane caused the sewer to back up and the entire community was under 3ft of water. The house was made in the 1950s but she wanted to rebuild it.

下６０ｃｍほどを取り除く。なんか解体屋をやっている感じで、毎日の仕事のストレスの発散になるような気がする。
Removed about 2ft of wall....first time for demolition work... it served to release my stress from the everyday work.
お昼頃には、家の前に残骸の山ができてきていた。
By lunchtime, there was this much debris in front of the house.

悪い子サンディちゃん - Part 1 [ボランティア活動]

本当にサンディちゃんは悪い子だった。
皆さんはOperation Arigatoを覚えていらっしゃると思います。
Everyone remembers Operation Arigato, right?
この写真は米軍がとったもので、仙台空港の近くの浜辺に木片を集めてある人が作ったメッセージです。感謝の気持ちを表すことは必要ですね。
This is a picture taken by the US armed forces when flying into Sendai Airport after the earthquake and tsunami we suffered last year. A person sent out this message by gathering debris. I believe it is very important to express our gratitude.
米国出張の一週目がおわり、週末になった。本来はこの出張は３週間前に行うものであったが、サンディちゃんのため、NJ Officeが４日間停電になり、また、多くの社員がもろに影響を食らったので、出張が延期になった。
I have been here in the US on a business trip for a week and now it is the weekend. I was supposed to be here three weeks ago, but because of Sandy-chan, our NJ Office was out of power for four days, much of the employees were affected and thus my business trip was postponed.
日本でニュースを見る。めちゃくちゃだ。NYCの地下鉄は水につかっている。これは大変だと実感した。
Watching the news in Japan. It was terrible. The subways in NYC was completely underwater. I knew it was bad.
そこで、社内のブログで寄付金の呼びかけがあり、ボランティア活動に参加したいと伝えたところ、We are Team Jerseyと連絡を取れるようにしてくれた。
The company was calling for donations and I posted that I would like to do some volunteer work. The company people referred me to We are Team Jersey.
するとFacebookでEventを企画していて、好きに参加する活動を選ぶことができ、一週間座って研修を受けた後のことを考え、一番ハードそうなものを選んだ。
They had a Facebook page and events were being posted where we could choose whichever event we wanted to attend. Considering that I was sitting on my butt for a week long in the office, I chose the one that seemed to offer the hardest work.
本日はOrtley Beachで家の残骸の片づけを手伝う予定であった。日本から持ってきたスマホをナビ代わりにして、レンタカーのマスタングに乗って、レッツゴー！ネットで調べた時には所要時間は約一時間。集合時間３０分に着く予定であった。
Today, I was to help out at Ortley Beach, clearing debris from a home there. I used the navigation on my smartphone that I brought from Japan and off we went! On my rental car...a Ford Mustang! Searching on the net, the estimated travel time was about one hour. I left the hotel so I will get there 30min prior to the time of gathering.
しかし、ナビに住所を間違えて入力。ちょっと離れたところに着いた。着いたところで間違っていることにすぐ気がついたので、もう１度入力。集合時間ちょうどに着く予定であった。
However, I made a mistake in entering the address and it took me to a place a bit off. I knew I was not in the right place, so I entered the address again and I was to arrive at the meeting time.
今度は渋滞。ちょっと遅れて着いたので、みんな先に行ってしまった。ま、いいや。直接行こうっと思い、ドライブを続ける。しかし、さらに渋滞。かなりの渋滞。遅い。どうしてだ。っと考えながら車を進める。そうしたら、やっぱりがれきの山や家の前に残骸などが出されていた。東北のボランティア活動を思い出す。うーん、かなりひどい。
Then there was a traffice jam. I got there a bit late. Everyone had gone. Keeping my spirits high, I decided to go directly to the location of our activity. I drive forward... then further traffic jam... it was getting worse. Wondering why, I drive further. Then, start to come across debris piled in front of houses which reminded me of the volunteer work I did in the Tohoku area after the tsunami.
すると、検問に当たる。渋滞の原因であった。警察官が「君は何しに来た？」っと聞いてきた。ボランティアできたことを告げると、「書類は？」っと聞かれ、持ってないことを伝えると、「だめだね。この先は住人しか入れないのだよ。そこの駐車場で連絡とって、迎えに来てもらえ」。あらま～。これは予想外。ま、それほど被害が出ているのだろうと思った。
Then I came upon a road block which was the cause of the traffic jam. The officer asked "what are you doing here?" I tell him I came to do some volunteer work, then he asks whether I had papers on this. I tell him I had none. "I can't let you in. From this point on, it is for residence only. You can park there in that parking lot and have some one pick you up." Ooohhh my... this was unexpected. But it showed how serious the situation was.
駐車場からFacebookにアクセス。We are Team Jerseyと連絡をとってみる。現場の責任者に連絡をとってみるからそこで待ってろと言われ、待っている間、スマホを使って仕事をする。待つこと、１時間半。誰も来ない。時間もたって、だんだん日没の時間が迫ってきた。これだと、今から行けてもだめだな。We are Team Jerseyには謝りのメッセージを送り、帰ることにした。
From the parking lot, I connected myself to Facebook and contacted We are Team Jersey. I was asked to wait until they can contact the project manager. So, while waiting, I did some work using my smartphone... waiting... an hour and a half... waiting some more and the sun was slowly starting to set already. I felt that even if I were able to get there I would not have enough time to work anyway. I sent an apology to We are Team Jersey and decided to head back.
しかし、帰りにはちょっとだけ被害の状況をみることができた。
On the way back, I was able to get a glimpse of the damage.
どう見ても、こんなところに船があるのはおかしいね。家も壊れているし。そこらじゅうに砂ばかり。
We can look at this anyway we like it but boats being here was a weird. Houses were damaged, and sand was everywhere.
作戦の第１日は大失敗に終わった。くそ～。。。明日は頑張るぞう！
Damn... the first day of my operation was a failure. Tomorrow I will do better!

そこで、社内のブログで寄付金の呼びかけがあり、ボランティア活動に参加したいと伝えたところ、We are Team Jerseyと連絡を取れるようにしてくれた。
The company was calling for donations and I posted that I would like to do some volunteer work. The company people referred me to We are Team Jersey.
するとFacebookでEventを企画していて、好きに参加する活動を選ぶことができ、一週間座って研修を受けた後のことを考え、一番ハードそうなものを選んだ。
They had a Facebook page and events were being posted where we could choose whichever event we wanted to attend. Considering that I was sitting on my butt for a week long in the office, I chose the one that seemed to offer the hardest work.
本日はOrtley Beachで家の残骸の片づけを手伝う予定であった。日本から持ってきたスマホをナビ代わりにして、レンタカーのマスタングに乗って、レッツゴー！ネットで調べた時には所要時間は約一時間。集合時間３０分に着く予定であった。
Today, I was to help out at Ortley Beach, clearing debris from a home there. I used the navigation on my smartphone that I brought from Japan and off we went! On my rental car...a Ford Mustang! Searching on the net, the estimated travel time was about one hour. I left the hotel so I will get there 30min prior to the time of gathering.
しかし、ナビに住所を間違えて入力。ちょっと離れたところに着いた。着いたところで間違っていることにすぐ気がついたので、もう１度入力。集合時間ちょうどに着く予定であった。
However, I made a mistake in entering the address and it took me to a place a bit off. I knew I was not in the right place, so I entered the address again and I was to arrive at the meeting time.
今度は渋滞。ちょっと遅れて着いたので、みんな先に行ってしまった。ま、いいや。直接行こうっと思い、ドライブを続ける。しかし、さらに渋滞。かなりの渋滞。遅い。どうしてだ。っと考えながら車を進める。そうしたら、やっぱりがれきの山や家の前に残骸などが出されていた。東北のボランティア活動を思い出す。うーん、かなりひどい。
Then there was a traffice jam. I got there a bit late. Everyone had gone. Keeping my spirits high, I decided to go directly to the location of our activity. I drive forward... then further traffic jam... it was getting worse. Wondering why, I drive further. Then, start to come across debris piled in front of houses which reminded me of the volunteer work I did in the Tohoku area after the tsunami.
すると、検問に当たる。渋滞の原因であった。警察官が「君は何しに来た？」っと聞いてきた。ボランティアできたことを告げると、「書類は？」っと聞かれ、持ってないことを伝えると、「だめだね。この先は住人しか入れないのだよ。そこの駐車場で連絡とって、迎えに来てもらえ」。あらま～。これは予想外。ま、それほど被害が出ているのだろうと思った。
Then I came upon a road block which was the cause of the traffic jam. The officer asked "what are you doing here?" I tell him I came to do some volunteer work, then he asks whether I had papers on this. I tell him I had none. "I can't let you in. From this point on, it is for residence only. You can park there in that parking lot and have some one pick you up." Ooohhh my... this was unexpected. But it showed how serious the situation was.
駐車場からFacebookにアクセス。We are Team Jerseyと連絡をとってみる。現場の責任者に連絡をとってみるからそこで待ってろと言われ、待っている間、スマホを使って仕事をする。待つこと、１時間半。誰も来ない。時間もたって、だんだん日没の時間が迫ってきた。これだと、今から行けてもだめだな。We are Team Jerseyには謝りのメッセージを送り、帰ることにした。
From the parking lot, I connected myself to Facebook and contacted We are Team Jersey. I was asked to wait until they can contact the project manager. So, while waiting, I did some work using my smartphone... waiting... an hour and a half... waiting some more and the sun was slowly starting to set already. I felt that even if I were able to get there I would not have enough time to work anyway. I sent an apology to We are Team Jersey and decided to head back.
しかし、帰りにはちょっとだけ被害の状況をみることができた。
On the way back, I was able to get a glimpse of the damage.
どう見ても、こんなところに船があるのはおかしいね。家も壊れているし。そこらじゅうに砂ばかり。
We can look at this anyway we like it but boats being here was a weird. Houses were damaged, and sand was everywhere.
作戦の第１日は大失敗に終わった。くそ～。。。明日は頑張るぞう！
Damn... the first day of my operation was a failure. Tomorrow I will do better!
